PEER sues White House for withholding documents from Monsanto-linked lobbyist regarding protection of GE crops in wildlife refuges

The non-profit advocacy group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) has filed a lawsuit against the Obama White House for refusing to comply with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests that would potentially unearth the administration’s direct ties to Monsanto and the biotechnology industry. The so-called administration of transparency is refusing to disclose portions of an email between a top White House policy analyst and a biotechnology lobbying group that appear to expose the administration’s role in promoting genetically-modified (GM) crops in national wildlife refuges.
The Biotechnology Industry Association (BIO), a lobbying group which represents Monsanto and other key purveyors of GM crops, has for years been in close contact with the Obama White House over the issue of GM crop plantings in national wildlife refuges. Both BIO and the White House appear to be working in tandem on strategies to ensure that GM crops remain in wildlife refuges, an agricultural disaster that PEER has been trying for quite some time to bring to an end.
PEER has been largely successful in restricting GM plantings in wildlife refuges through repeated lawsuits, including one early last year that put an end to GM plantings in 12 wildlife refuges across the Northeast (http://www.naturalnews.com/031030_GMOs_lawsuit.html). But based on information that has been extracted via FOIA requests, the White House appears to be directly undercutting these measures by assisting BIO in protecting GM crops in other wildlife refuges from legal challenges.
And of particular concern is a January email between Peter Schmeissner, senior science policy analyst and member of the White House’s biotechnology working group, and BIO, in which specific details about the biotechnology industry’s lobbying strategies are laid out. The White House has deliberately censored certain sections of the email that is says contain biotechnology industry secrets, a fact that represents undeniable evidence that the Obama White House and the biotechnology industry are a close partnership.
“We suspect the reason an industry lobbyist so cavalierly shared strategy is that the White House is part of that strategy,” said PEER staff counsel Kathryn Douglas about the situation. “The White House’s legal posture is as credible as claiming Coca Cola’s secret formula was ‘inadvertently’ left in a duffel bag at the bus station.”
None of this is surprising since the Obama White House is filled with pro-GM players like Michael Taylor, a former Monsanto lobbyist who was appointed by Obama to be deputy commissioner for food at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) chief Tom Vilsack, another Obama appointee, was also responsible for pushing through the approval of GM alfalfa early last year (http://www.naturalnews.com/031196_GE_alfalfa_GMOs.html).

Firstly, the bill will not affect people who grow or process food for  themselves and their family or keep seed. The bill does affect people who sell  or trade food, including barter, but how much depends of the scale and type of  the operation. Keep in mind that barter is not the same as reciprocal gift  giving of excess harvest. Barter is a commercial transaction (maintaining value)  while gift giving is a social transaction (maintaining relationships). The bill  does not mention gift giving at all but I’d argue it does not apply to it.

At the lowest end of the scale, some people who trade food will have no new  obligations under the bill. They will be subject to “food handler guidelines” but these will be educative only. This will be for things like clubs providing  food to members secondary to an activity, school fairs, growers that sell at the  farm gate or at farmers markets, very small scale or home-based production,  people who sell things like chippies only, childcare providers where food  handling is no more than, say, cutting up apples. This is not a complete list  and schedule 3 of the bill sets it out in more detail.

The next level is where people have to go on a public register and will have  to comply with a National Programme. These will be designed to identify and deal  with potential health risks from food production. NB This will almost certainly  not deal with things like pesticide residues or GMOs, but will be aimed at  hygiene and gross contamination etc. They will also specify what paperwork  businesses need to do to reassure the Ministry that they are complying. National  Programmes with be at three levels of hassle, depending on type of business.

Level 1, the easiest, will cover honey, wholesale horticultural growers and  pack houses, sugar refineries, people who sell hot drinks and prepackaged foods  only, ice cream and ice block makers and food transportation companies.

Level 2 will include bakeries that only make bread, residential child care,  lolly makers, dehydrated fruits, crisps and popcorn, jam, pickles and preserves,  water and ice, frozen food (not ice cream), cereals and biscuits.

Level 3 businesses include those that make things like alcohol and  non-alcohol drinks, edible oils and margerines, food additives (incl. vitamins  and minerals), flours and grains and things like dairies with pick ‘n’ mix  lollies and garages that heat up pies. Again, a full list of what is covered in  set out in schedule 2 of the bill.

The heaviest regulation comes for businesses that have to register a Food  Control Plan. This includes the food retail sector (bakeries, dairies that make  filled rolls, fish mongers and butchers), food service sector (on premises, home  or commercial delivery, take away and mobile) and manufacturers of everything  from dairy products, herbs, dips and nuts to commercially sterilised food, dry  powders and vegetable proteins. The full list is set out in schedule 1 of the  bill.

A Food Control Plan must begin with a detailed description of the business  including the type of food it deals with and the nature of the business. It must  identify all the hazards and risks and set out how the business will deal with  them. It must also set out who is responsible for the plan and verification  procedures.

The plan can be developed by an individual business or adapted from someone  else’s. It can also be based on a template that the Ministry may develop for  different classes of business. The plan must be registered and approved – in  practise by the local authority under powers delegated by the Ministry. There  are a range of procedures for amending, approving and appealing.

The bill also has special clauses for winemakers and requires importers to be  registered on a public register and comply with certain requirements.

If a lot of this looks like incredibly bureaucratic paper-shuffling, that’s  because it is. Making dairies write a Food Control Plan with all the on-going  verification and paperwork that goes with it because they make filled rolls is  kind of bizarre. What’s more, if the dairy gets sold the new owner has to  register a new Food Control Plan. I seriously doubt that filled rolls and samosa  from the local Four Square present enough of a health risk to New Zealanders to  warrant this kind of bureaucratic overkill.

In fact I don’t know any significant problems with the way the system  operates now that deserves this level of intervention. The current Food Act from  1981 probably does need updating but this is something far more ambitious than  that. It’s Ministry empire building.

GMOs may cause widespread umbilical cord deformities

Specifically, “Mother Robin” is now reportedly seeing a huge increase in umbilical cord deformities that she believes may be caused by GMOs, according to text attributed to her.

Two weeks ago we had Padma, a vegetarian for 15 + years. This 4th baby was born healthy… but the cord was flat and 4 to 5 cm wide (looked like a tape worm) and had five skinny vulnerable vessels arriving each separately to the placenta.

GMOs – an industry of death

No wonder GMOs are the favored technology of people like Bill Gates who publicly and openly espouse a dramatic reduction in the human population (depopulation agenda) (http://www.naturalnews.com/029911_vaccines_Bill_Gates.html). Any agricultural “technology” that promotes umbilical cord defects, birth defects, infertility and unhealthy babies will eventually lead to a population collapse of the species it is feeding… which in this case is humans.

3rd Briton dies of Legionnaires’ disease in Spain

A government statement said the three, aged between 73 and 78, had contracted the disease at a hotel in the eastern town of Calpe. The statement said a further 10 Britons and four Spaniards were being treated for the disease.

 

The U.K.-based company Saga Holidays reported the first two deaths Thursday, saying the Britons had stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe. The names of the three victims were not released. The Valencia government said authorities have taken measures to control the outbreak, including closing the hotel.

Saga Holidays said it learned Jan. 14 that one of its customers was being treated for pneumonia caused by the Legionnaires’ bacteria and it then began moving customers to other hotels. Paul Green, head of communications, said customers who had stayed at the hotel previously were contacted, and five people who recently stayed there were treated in British hospitals with all but one later discharged.

 

Legionnaires’ disease is named for an outbreak at an American Legion convention in 1976 where 34 people died. It is caused by a bacterium most often found in sources of standing water and can be contracted by breathing air contaminated by the bacterium.

The elderly and people with weak immune systems or lung problems are most susceptible.

Aspartame: Deadly sweet

Nutrasweet (brand name for Aspartame) was not approved until 1981, in dry foods. For over eight years the FDA refused to approve it because of the seizures and brain tumors this drug produced in lab animals. The FDA continued to refuse to approve it until President Reagan took office (a friend of Searle) and fired the FDA Commissioner who wouldn’t approve it. Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes was appointed as commissioner. Even then there was so much opposition to approval that a Board of Inquiry was set up. The Board said: “Do not approve aspartame”. Dr. Hayes OVERRULED his own Board of Inquiry.

Shortly after Commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages, he left for a position with G.D. Searle’s Public Relations firm.

Long-Term Damage. It appears to cause slow, silent damage in those unfortunate enough to not have immediate reactions and a reason to avoid it. It may take one year, five years, 10 years, or 40 years, but it seems to cause some reversible and some irreversible changes in health over long-term use.

METHANOL (AKA WOOD ALCOHOL/POISON) (10% OF ASPARTAME) Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. People may recall that methanol was the poison that has caused some “skid row” alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.

The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a “food” product such as Jello).

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol “is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic.” The recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.

The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects. Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr Woodrow C. Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University, “There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol.”

It has been pointed out that fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, that the methanol in natural products never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an antidote for methanol toxicity in humans.

The troops of Desert Storm were “treated” to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages which had been heated to over 86 degrees F. in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses. Other breakdown products ofaspartame such as DKP, may also have been a factor.

In a 1993 act that can only be described as “unconscionable”, the FDA approved aspartame as an ingredient in numerous food items that would always be heated to above 86°degrees F (30°Degrees C).

Much worse, on 27 June 1996, without public notice, the FDA removed all restrictions from aspartame allowing it to be used in everything, including all heated and baked goods.

The truth about aspartame’s toxicity is far different than what the NutraSweet Company would have you readers believe. In February of 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the listing of adverse reactions reported to the FDA (DHHS 1994). Aspartame accounted for more than 75% of all adverse reactions reported to the FDA’s Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS). By the FDA’s own admission fewer then ONE PERCENT of those who have problems with something they consume ever report it to the FDA. This balloons the almost 10,000 complaints they once had to around a million.

However, the FDA has a record keeping problem (they never did respond to the certified letter from the WEBMASTER of this site a major victim!) and they tend to discourage or even misdirect complaints, at least on aspartame. The fact remains, though, that MOST victims don’t have a clue that aspartame may be the cause of their many problems! Many reactions to aspartame were very serious including seizures and death.

How it happens:

Methanol, from aspartame, is released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounters the enzyme chymotrypsin (Stegink 1984, page 143). Free methanol begins to form in liquid aspartame-containing products at temperatures above 86 degrees F. also within the human body.

The methanol is then converted to formaldehyde. The formaldehyde converts to formic acid – ant sting poison. Toxic formic acid is used as an activator to strip epoxy and urethane coatings. Imagine what it does to your tissues! (Note from Stephanie Relfe – Even the Australian Cancer Council says that there are NO safe levels of formaldehyde).

Phenylalanine and aspartic acid, 90% of aspartame, are amino acids normally used in synthesis of protoplasm when supplied by the foods we eat. But when unaccompanied by other amino acids we use [there are 20], they are neurotoxic.

That is why a warning for Phenylketonurics is found on EQUAL and other aspartame products. Phenylketenurics are 2% of the population with extreme sensitivity to this chemical unless it’s present in food. It gets you too, causing brain disorders and birth defects! Finally, the phenyalanine breaks down into DKP, a brain tumor agent.

In other words: Aspartame converts to dangerous by-products that have no natural countermeasures. A dieter’s empty stomach accelerates these conversions and amplifies the damage. Components of aspartame go straight to the brain, damage that causes headaches, mental confusion, seizures and faulty balance. Lab rats and other test animals died of brain tumors.

Despite the claims of Monsanto and bedfellows:

1. Methanol from alcohol and juices does not get converted to formaldehyde to any significant extent. There is very strong evidence to confirm this fact for alcoholic beverages and fairly strong evidence for juices.

2. Formaldehyde obtained from methanol is very toxic in *very small* doses as seen by recent research.

3. Aspartame causes chronic toxicity reactions/damage due to the methanol to formaldehyde and other break down products despite what is claimed otherwise by the very short, industry-funded experiments using a test substance that is chemically different and absorbed differently than what is available to the general public. “Strangely enough”, almost all independent studies show that aspartame can cause health problems.

4. A common ploy from Monsanto is to claim that aspartame is “safe” yet a few select people may have “allergic” reactions to it. This is typical Monsanto nonsense, of course. Their own research shows that it does not cause “allergic” reactions. It is there way of trying to minimize and hide the huge numbers of toxicity reactions and damage that people are experiencing from the long-term use of aspartame.

Summary

Given the following points, it is definitely premature for researchers to discount the role of methanol in aspartame side effects:

1. The amount of methanol ingested from aspartame is unprecedented in human history. Methanol from fruit juice ingestion does not even approach the quantity of methanol ingested from aspartame, especially in persons who ingest one to three liters (or more) of diet beverages every day. Unlike methanol from aspartame, methanol from natural products is probably not absorbed or converted to its toxic metabolites in significant amounts as discussed earlier.

2. Lack of laboratory-detectable changes in plasma formic acid and formaldehyde levels do not preclude damage being caused by these toxic metabolites. Laboratory-detectable changes in formate levels are often not found in short exposures to methanol.

3. Aspartame-containing products often provide little or no nutrients which may protect against chronic methanol poisoning and are often consumed in between meals. Persons who ingest aspartame-containing products are often dieting and more likely to have nutritional deficiencies than persons who take the time to make fresh juices.

4. Persons with certain health conditions or on certain drugs may be much more susceptible to chronic methanol poisoning.

5. Chronic diseases and side effects from slow poisons often build silently over a long period of time. Many chronic diseases which seem to appear suddenly have actually been building in the body over many years.

6. An increasing body of research is showing that many people are highly sensitive to low doses of formaldehyde in the environment. Environmental exposure to formaldehyde and ingestion of methanol (which converts to formaldehyde) from aspartame likely has a cumulative deleterious effect.

7. Formic acid has been shown to slowly accumulate in various parts of the body. Formic acid has been shown to inhibit oxygen metabolism.

8. The are a very large and growing number of persons are experiencing chronic health problems similar to the side effects of chronic methanol poisoning when ingesting aspartame-containing products for a significant length of time. Tell all your friends and family… and if they stop using aspartame and also “wake up well”… get them involved in the same way.

Aspartame is an “approved sweetener” because of a few greedy and dishonest people who place profits above human life and well-being. With the FDA and our Congress culpable, only an INFORMED and ACTIVE public will affects its reclassification from “food additive” to TOXIC DRUG, and removed from the human food chain.

Proof that the cancer industry doesn’t want a cure – even if it’s a pharmaceutical

A safe and effective cure for cancer has been discovered with a drug that was once used for unusual metabolic problems. Yet, the cancer industry shows no interest with following up on dichloroacetate (DCA) research from University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, reported in 2007. That’s because DCA is no longer patented. (1)
That research also confirmed cancer as a metabolic malfunction, not a weird mutation of cells often explained away as a genetic issue. But the medical mafia doesn’t want you to hear about it. But it confirms what most alternative cancer therapists already know.
Since Nixon declared the “war on cancer” in the 1970s, the cancer industry has succeeded with raising money for researching very expensive chemo substances at $50,000 to $100,000 per round or more for toxic therapies that rarely work. (2)

Explaining DCA research results

Evangelos Michelakis and the Alberta University research team tested DCA on human cancer cells outside the body and in cancerous mice with profound success. DCA was once used for unusual metabolic disorders. The worst side effects, which rarely occur, include some numbness and an affected gait.
The mice were fed DCA in water, and in weeks they had remarkable tumor shrinkage. This indicates DCA can be taken orally. DCA works by restoring the cells’ mitochondria. Michelakis and his team had discovered that the mitochondria in cancer cells are not permanently damaged and irreparable. This is what mainstream medicine thinks.
With mitochondria malfunctioning, cancer cells use glucose fermentation for survival energy. This fermentation occurs when glycolysis (glucose conversion) occurs in an anaerobic cellular environment, which can be created by benign tumor masses, toxins, and low pH levels.
DCA restores mitochondria in cells to make them function properly. Another function of normal mitochondria is signaling apoptosis, or cellular self destruction. Normal cells die and become replaced constantly. But with cancer cells, the apoptosis signal is nullified, making cancer cells “immortal.” (3)
The Alberta University researchers also realized that glycolysis fermentation in cancer cells produces lactic acid. The lactic acid breaks down the collagen holding those cells together in a tumor. This allows cancer cells to easily break away from a tumor shrinking with mainstream therapies.
The researchers reasoned this is why cancer metastasizes or spreads to different parts of the body or reappears after remission from chemo.

Tragic hypocrisy

Alternative cancer therapies have little or no problem with metastatic cancer or even cancer reoccurring after remission. Most alternative cancers simply cure cancers completely.
DCA offers the cancer industry an opportunity to come up with a pharmaceutical cure that is much cheaper and safer than their current standard of care. Yet the cancer industry is ignoring this opportunity. Instead, DCA is a homeless orphan begging for research funds to avoid legal issues with off label use on cancer. (4)
Alternative cancer practitioners have always simply tried out and when they succeeded shared them with others who cared more about healing than money and power.
The medical mafia has created a matrix that demands big bucks to make big bucks for sick care instead of curing. Everyone in on the scam makes out financially. The cancer industry accuses alternative cancer therapists of quackery and taking advantage of the desperately ill for financial gain. Accusing others of your motives and crimes is called projection.
The medical/pharmaceutical complex is crony capitalism that doesn’t want a cure for cancer from anywhere.

Marketing of fast foods (and all other marketing also)

We are bombarded with advertising all day, and if thats not bad enough we often get the catchy tunes stuck in our heads and most probably even dream adverts.
Most advertising bases itself on your own unhappyness and always promises to bring you happyness, make you more atractive, make people notice you etc etc etc. It basicly makes you feel incomplete and worthless untill you buy the item being pushed upon you.
Not only this but they also even employ psychologists to better manipulate the masses into buying their products.

In short there is nothing you can’t do for yourself, you don’t need a “profesional” to do it for you, they use big words to sound like they know more but anyone can learn these words, you are not inadequate you can do anything you just have to believe in yourself!!

In a discussion paper, Waikato District Health Board’s Population Health service has accused exhausting marketing gimmicks of fast foods for triggering type 2 diabetes and obesity in a large number of people.In the discussion paper entitled “Obesity, diabetes and fast food – the impact of marketing to children”, the authorities concerned looked over the issues like sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical exercise, which has triggered obesogenic environments.

The author of the paper, Nick Chester, said that the aim of the paper to make the authorities think as to how they can turn obesogenic environment into healthy environment. It has been found that the marketing firms are targeting children by exposing them to luxurious ads of soft drinks and fast food.

Previously, the advertisement firms were criticized for using internet for attracting kids. Daily intake of fast foods and energy drinks leads to higher chances or risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity. A survey conducted in 2006-2007 found that about 70% of the kids in the age group of 2 to 14 years consume fast food at least for once in a weak.

However, 7% of the children consume fast food frequently in a week. The figures clearly show that in the New Zealand, consumption of fast food is quite frequent. It has been informed that there are a large number of fast food chains located at places like Waikato.

Although the number of fast food chains is high in number, the promotional ads further contribute in attracting children to fast food. It is not feasible to ask fast food chain to close down the production of fast foods. But a control over the advertisement gimmicks chosen by the manufacturer can play vital role in reducing obesity cases.
